Dont Buy a Pig in a Poke At a time meat was scarce in the Middle Ages, hucksters told unwise shoppers they had a suckling pig in a closed bag (poke). The bag would actually contain a cat or dog (substantially less valuable as a source of meat), which was sold to the victim in the unopened bag. No matter who is backing the AAATA proposal, they dont know, or are not telling you, whats in the bag. It can conceal grandiose rail transit studies huge p.r. and ad campaigns and costly studies. If you buy into this extra tax, youre buying--that is funding--far more than you can see. Dont Accept a Trojan Horse Another classic example of tricky packaging. What the Trojans thought was a present turned out to be a predator. Many private interests and public officials are happy to have Ann Arbor taxpayers, who believe theyre helping seniors, the disabled and retirees, subsidize outlandish schemes. Their ulterior motives are hidden. But one things for sure: all of the scheduled route improvement and expansions can be funded with the current millage rate. Dont Bet in a Shell Game In a shell game, the operator shuffles three shells and takes bets from the audience on the location of a pea under one of the shells. The audience is told that if a player bets and guesses correctly, the player will win back double their bet; otherwise the player loses their money. In the hands of a skilled operator, however, it is not possible for the game to be won, unless the operator wants the player to win. If the AAATA and its backers wanted you to win, why havent they designed an efficient and effective transit system before now? Dont Be a Patsy Hucksters -- defined as persons who sell or advertise something in an aggressive, dishonest, or annoying way -- depend on a patsy, someone who for a variety of reasons is easy to deceive. Taxpayers, who now subsidize an efficient system that gives free rides to downtown employees and some other privileged parties, may believe their yes vote is needed to fulfill the transit promises described in the lavish ad campaigns. Vote No! Dont be a patsy!
