Don’s Daily Parable-You Don’t Need a Jack-8/22/2013 You may not realize it, but a car or truck can weigh from 3000 to 4500 pounds. That is pretty heavy. How would it be if you had a flat tire on one of these heavy vehicles and found that you had no jack to lift it up, so you could change the tire? You would be in pretty bad shape. I know you’ve seen Nolan Ryan’s commercials about cracked foundations and fixin’ it for good. Well, the first thing you have to do is jack that house’s foundation up so that it’s level again. After that, the company can pour concrete piers under the house so you won’t have that problem again. You have all seen a picture of or actually seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Now that would take some kind of jack to move that thing to level again. They have been working on it, though, but it will take years to do. The earth that it is built on is very unstable, so it will probably take constant maintenance to keep it close to level. You see people when you are out and about doing shopping or getting your car serviced, or eating somewhere who seem to need a little pick-me-up. I don’t mean a hit of whiskey. I’m talking about an encouraging word from someone. There is plenty to get people down in the dumps today. The economy is certainly not in the best shape that it has been in, unemployment is very high, the divorce rate is high, and people just feel like there is no hope. You wouldn’t believe the difference you and I can make in one of these people’s lives. It doesn’t necessarily cost anything, although if you feel led to, you might be able to help someone financially. For the most part, though, just a friendly smile or an encouraging word, or telling someone what a good job they are doing, can make a world of difference in their day. Maybe you are eating out in a restaurant and you are very friendly to the waiter or waitress, it may be exactly what they need to make their day better. A nice tip wouldn’t hurt, either. You don’t need a jack to lift someone up. God bless you.
