Dr. Monica Wakefield Presented at the Spring 2015 NKU Board of Regents Meeting Monica Wakefield has been with NKU since 2013. Her presentation to the NKU Board of Regents was entitled, The Iyema Bonobo Research and Conservation Initiative. She is a field primatologist specializing in behavioral ecology of African apes. She earned her Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Yale University in 2010 and has conducted research on gorillas in the Central African Republic, chimpanzees in Uganda, and most recently, bonobos in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). She was awarded three awards and fellowships from NKU (Summer Fellowship, Faculty Project Grant, and a Professional Development Fund) that enabled her to travel to the DRC to begin pilot research on bonobos. Monica’s work has been published in peer-review journals and she has presented her research at numerous national and international scientific conferences. At NKU she has mentored and collaborated with undergraduates on research projects at the Cincinnati Zoo. These students have presented their work at regional conferences and one student will be presenting at a national conference for the Association of Physical Anthropologists this coming Spring.
