Dr the Hon Ralph Gonsalves, PM of St Vincent and the Grenadines, on Caribbean political economy and the notion of Barbados as a distinctive idea. He suggests, inter alia, that Jamaica is a brand, but not an idea, that Trinidad is an incomplete national formation with immense possibilities but constrained by a bundle of limitations, including rising lawlessness. Closer to home (i.e., BVI), he holds that “Successful British colonies such as Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands are, in many ways, artificial societies. The French overseas territories of Martinique and Guadeloupe are subsidised enclaves in the region, in search of a Caribbean identity.
