Draft Blurb for my next novel, the sequel to Zero-Sum. Warning - contains spoilers if you havent read the first novel, you have been warned.... INSURGENT TOWN By Mark Lynch “Now people, rise up and let the storm break loose!” Theodore Korner July 1969, the struggle continues...Sean McCann and Josie Ferguson return to the Soviet-controlled North of Ireland. Josie is determined to avenge the death of her father, whilst Sean has reluctantly agreed to re-join the underground resistance, in return for the movement’s help in rescuing his imprisoned sister and her two young children. Meanwhile, Special Branch enforcer Alec Lynch learns of Sean’s return to Belfast and redoubles his efforts to capture the rebel leader, as Lynch blames McCann and his resistance comrades for the deaths of the Belfast hostages. As McCann and Lynch play their deadly game of cat and mouse, the situation on the streets of Belfast is quickly spiralling out of control. The Nationalist population is still in a state of grief following the murder of a popular local priest, and the community is further outraged when the Red government announces the planned execution of a young Catholic woman. Meanwhile, the outlawed Orange Order has re-formed and its leaders are planning a march through East Belfast to mark the 12th July. The Order’s plot risks provoking the communist security forces, and now the Orangemen must face a dangerous new enemy, a Red militia company of ex-criminals, nicknamed the ‘Rathlin Hoods’. A fresh bout of violence pushes the peoples’ anger up to fever pitch and thousands take to the streets in protest, including Dr Laurence Martin and Emily McArdle, now leaders of the radical Peoples Democracy group. Soon the entire city is in a state of open rebellion and, for a time at least, Protestants and Catholics will fight together against a common enemy. The rival superpowers are taken off-guard by the rapid developments in the North. Malakhov, the ruthless Soviet commander, considers his response, and the CIA recalls Greg Steele, the only man who can act as a liaison to the resurgent resistance movement. Sean McCann seeks to consolidate and defend the gains made by the Belfast rebels, but soon he will face a vicious new nemesis, a man whose nihilist sectarian violence threatens to destroy the uneasy alliance forged between the two communities...
