Dundas rolls the dice and wins on Rowe’s shot DUNDAS—Deuces were wild, and like good gambling men the Dundas Real McCoys rolled the dice, and won the 2014 Allan Cup Trophy on Randy Rowe’s shot from the point before more than 1200 rabid fans today in the JL Grightmire Arena. In the course of becoming the 2014 Men’s Senior AAA hockey champions of Canada, the McCoys witnessed history repeat itself. In 2008, Dundas won the John Ross Robertson Cup as Ontario Senior AAA champions, but lost to Brantford Blast 3-2 in overtime in the semifinal of the Allan Cup Tournament. The Blast went on to win the 100th Allan Cup Trophy title. Fast forward to 2014, Brantford won the Robertson Cup, but was eliminated in the Allan Cup quarterfinal. The Real McCoys went on to win both the Gordon Renwick Trophy as Ontario Hockey Federation champions and the Allan Cup. Dundas won the Renwick by beating the Kenora Thistles 4-0 on Friday night in semifinal action. The Allan Cup victory by the Dundas Real McCoys marked the 49th time that an Ontario team has won the Cup in its 106 years of its existence. Photo by Richard Zazulak Darryl Smith opened the scoring for Dundas at 16:56 of the first period on a pass from Scott Mifsud. Cam Fergus on his first of two powerplay goals tied the score early in the second period, only to have Smith assisted by Mifsud put the McCoys back in front with two minutes left in the middle period. Fergus then tied the score with his second goal midway through the third. And so, the Deuces were wild, and Lady Luck shone down on the Valley Town boys. At 13:42 of overtime, Justin Davis won the faceoff, fed the puck to Greg Stewart, who put the puck on the stick of Rowe at the blueline, and the game was over. Regardless of the score, both goalkeepers were the stars of the game. Dundas goalie Mike Mole faced 53 shots to earn the victory while Clarenville’s Jason Churchill faced 41. Ironically, for both Churchill and Clarenville the outcome marked the second consecutive year that they lost in the Allan Cup final. Last year, the Caribous fell to the Bentley Generals. Mole for his efforts was named the tournament’s allstar goaltender and recipient of the Bill Saunders Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player. Cam Fraser and Matt Quinn of Clarenville were named as forwards on the tournament allstar team along with Dundas’s Ryan Christie. Luke Gallant of the Caribous and Simon Mangos of Dundas were named the allstar defencemen. Darryl Smith (14) was everywhere in the early going as he led the Dundas Real McCoys to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Clarenville Caribous with a pair of goals in the 2014 Allan Cup Tournament final. The Cup was presented in Feb 1909 and Ottawa clinched the Inter-Provincial League title on Mar 6,1909. On Mar 15,1909 they lost the challenge to Queens University. Thus there were two winners of the Cup in 1909 and not 1908 as it had been reported Thanks to Eric Zweig, Society for International Hockey research for the correction.
