During my long tenure working at The Culver Studios, it was a privilege and a thrill to watch talented and famous artists at work on many occasions. In 1989, one of my favorite actors, Robert Mitchum, shot several scenes at the studio for a TV movie called Jake Spanner, Private Eye, which co-starred the wonderful Ernest Borgnine and Mitchums brother, John. (John is perhaps best known as Harrys partner DiGiorgio in three of the Dirty Harry series.) At the first opportunity I went to the stage where the project was being shot. Concealed on a clipboard beneath some paperwork was a still that I had from a film that I love very much, Sydney Pollacks The Yakuza. (I could go on for some time about that film, but Ill save those ruminations for another occasion.) I found Robert Mitchum relaxing in a directors chair during a camera set-up. I said to him, Mr. Mitchum, this picture is from one of my favorites of your films. Would you autograph it for me? He gave a nod and the slightest of smiles, took the photo and the red Sharpie I provided, and wrote--and wrote, obviously writing more than his name. Without a word, he handed it back, I thanked him, and went on my way. It was only after I left the stage that I read the whimsical inscription he made.
