END OF YEAR LETTER FRM MRS SPEAKMAN, HEADTEACHER. Dear Parents/Carers As we reach the end of another busy and highly successful year for AGGS, I know you will want to join me in thanking the girls, the staff, the governors and our many friends and supporters in the community. Without them, and you, the school could not possibly be the vibrant and high-achieving school it is. This year we received the exciting news that Dana Ross-Wawrzynski, the Executive Head of Altrincham Girls’ Grammar School and CEO of the Bright Futures Educational Trust, was awarded a Damehood in the Queen’s Honours List. This is a huge honour for her personally and for the school as well. It is impossible to list our many events and successes this year, although the highlights include our “Annie” production, the Charity Fair, the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative group who won a £3,000 grant for their chosen charity, the Booth Centre, and our Outlook expeditions to Nicaragua. Each year the girls and the staff come up with new ideas and their “can do” attitude ensures that each undertaking is of the highest standard. As we await the results of the A Levels and GCSEs, we have much to celebrate. We have had three independent audits: whole school (including Teaching and Learning), Safeguarding and Special Educational Needs. All three rated the school as “Outstanding” in these categories. However, we are never complacent and feedback from the girls, parents and staff has helped us to formulate our planning for continued improvement. We have received some lovely comments from girls and parents who are leaving us this year who have recognised that staff are always willing to go the extra mile to support and enthuse your daughters. This year, three of our staff have summer weddings: Miss Duerden, Miss Martinez and Miss Russell. We wish them much joy and plenty of sunshine! Sadly, it is also time to say goodbye to some of our members of staff: Miss Williams and Miss Crowther (ICT support) and Mrs Harrison from the English Department are taking up new posts. Mr Liu who was employed on a temporary contract also has a new job. Dr Winter (Chemistry) is travelling next year but we hope to tempt her back in the near future. Ms Mears is continuing in her post at our partner school, Cedar Mount. What is truly exceptional this year is the fact that we have a crop of retirements. We have known for many years that a large number of staff were due to take retirement at the end of this academic year. Although we wish them lots of fun in their well-deserved retirements, we shall miss their knowledge, wisdom and resilience! The following teachers are putting away their mark books and planners for the last time: Mrs Allen, Mrs Arber, Mrs Bocquet, Mrs Hodkinson, Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Stuart, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Wickstead. We are thrilled, however, that the reputation of the school has meant that we have been able to recruit outstanding replacements who are delighted to have been appointed. School will close for all students at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday 23 July. Please note that parents/carers will need to make arrangements to collect the girls at this earlier time. Please be aware that girls must be picked up at this time as the Library will be closed and there will be no supervision. In addition, there will be an early finish for Year 12 students on Monday 22 July at 2.30 p.m. The new academic year for Year 12 students begins on Monday 2 September when students are required to enrol at the Sixth Form Centre. Students should report at any time from 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. to register. They will only be required to stay 15 minutes and do not need to come in Sixth Form dress on this day. Year 12 students will begin formally on Tuesday 3 September and should be at the Sixth Form Centre for 10.00 a.m. All other years will start on Tuesday 3 September. Year 7 should arrive at 8.40 a.m. and all other years (except Yr 12) should arrive for registration at 11.00 a.m. Year 13 students should arrive at the Sixth Form Common Room, as they will have different tutor rooms for the new school year. I wish you and your family a very relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday and I look forward to meeting you all again in the new academic year. I very much value the support of all who work to make AGGS a really remarkable school. With every good wish. Yours faithfully M Speakman Headteacher
