ENGLISH WORDS FROM INDIA: SHAMPOO. the term was originally a verb in English and referred to giving sumone a relaxing massage. it is a borrowing of the Hindi, CHAMPO, which came from CHAMPNA meaning to massage, to press. its modern use as a verb meaning- to wash the hair, and as a noun denoting the cleansing agent itself, dates from the 1860s. DINGHY. (late 18th cent) the Hindi word DENGHI or DI NGI was a dimunitive of DENGA, boat, and reffered to a small open native boat. JUNGLE. (18th cent) the Hindi word JANGAL(from Sanskrit JANGALA- desert) originally referred to uncultivated land, bush. Anglo-Indians use thenapplied the term uncultivated areas that were covered with dense vegetation. by the mid-nineteenth century the word was being applied to similiar areas in othe rparts of the world and had also gained its figurative applications. BUNGALOW.(17th cent) first recorded as BUNGALE in the second half of the seveenth century, the word comes from Hindi BANGLA meaning Of Bengal. it is therefore denoted a Bengali-style house, that is a flimsy one-storey construction with a thatched roof. :) :) :)
