ESCAPE FROM ERITREA Whats happening to our people, with a beautiful and strategically very important country like ours, our people are leaving the country in thousands. I for one, escapped myself, during the Ethiopian military rule. Now Eritrea is free from the Ethiopian rule, but people are leaving the country more than, during the Dergues rule. Many Eritreans including former soldiers recounted the risk they took to leave their homes and army units. They trekked across the dangerous borders into Ethiopia and The Sudan, patrolled by guards with a shoot to kill policy. They took days to walk through the rough areas and the desert. Many died on that journey; some were shot, some captured and jailed for years. They know the risks, but had to get out. Most fighters spent so long fighting for the freedom of Eritrea, and they end up out of their country. They had a dream that one day they can return home and live in peace. But they believe that there is no future in Eritrea with the government currently in power there. While opposition groups in exile may be vocal in condemnation of the regime, inside Eritrea, the people have no voice, because they crushed into silence. As for the opposition abroad, there are some signs, now of common platform emerging, but for years it has been a terrible disappointment-fractious, squabbling. Now the campaign for unity by Dr Tewolde Tesfamariam in American cities is encouraging and create a new Ray of hope for unity for Eritrean people.
