Each and every birth has definite significance on this earth. i have NO DOUBT about that. However, as an obstetrician, i often wonder at the purpose or significance of lives lasting only for few days, weeks or months, being never born in this world...Probably, we cant see the entire picture, our senses and analysis are limited and hence this wonder and confusion. Lets look at the intriguing cases of Downs syndrome. Most of these fetuses die silently in the womb and are miscarried, or are diagnosed by modern technology and are aborted. BUT, many of them are born and live for years in this world. As a doctor i have to counsel about these fetuses to prospective parents, and none would like to have a Downs baby (the real insecurity is about who will look after them after the demise of the parents) and yet, once in England i got a reply from a mother which i can never forget. Doctor, if such a child is born to me, ill gladly receive him/her as a special present from God, to specially look after. i dont need the test, doctor. Though this is the commonest cause of mental retardation in humans, these children are extraordinarily gifted with social skills. THEY KNOW HOW TO LOVE A FELLOW HUMAN. A dad of such a girl had once told me, when i go home, it is SHE, and no one else, who asks me, daddy, should i bring you a glass of water? This world is often devoid of real love. May be, may be some of these children stay with us for some time, makes the same journey on this earth with this extraordinary gift to share with us...to remind us there are many other dimensions in life than the steadfast mundane rules of society...
