Each week, Alabama Heritage will feature a ghost town from Alabama, where people once lived and conducted business, but are now empty, lifeless, and forgotten. This week, we feature Young’s Ferry. This early county seat was near the site of the ancient Indian town of Okfuskee, approximately forty miles northeast of the junction of the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers, on the eastern bank of the Tallapoosa, in Tallapoosa County. On March 24, 1832, the Creek Indians ceded lands to the U.S. Government, and a portion of this land became Tallapoosa County on December 18, 1832. Young’s Ferry was chosed as the first seat of justice for the new county and remained as such until 1838 when the seat was moved to Dadeville. (Information has been gathered from W. Stuart Harriss book, Dead Towns of Alabama, published by #UAPress bit.ly/1mj2rK4).
