Earthquake Survival and Myths Anyone who has lived in earthquake prone areas has an idea on how to survive them, however people who have relocated to these areas within the last 25 years may have no idea at all. With the growing concern at current day it is important to understand what to do during and after the quake, as well as understand myths that have developed throughout the years. Some proclaimed experts say that ducking and covering is the worst thing to do as if a building collapses, you will go with it. If the building collapses there is little you can do anyways. Hiding under a table or chair is the best option. Some myths include standing in a doorway and shutting off the gas if you smell it. Standing in doorways is dangerous as the door could swing and strike you, and the gas should be shut off regardless if a smell is present. Do not run for the door as there could be many obstacles that could fall and injure you on the way out, and always avoid stairs even for a period of time after the shaking stops. If you are in a vehicle try to stop in a safe area, get out and sit or lye next to the vehicle. If something falls on the vehicle it will smash it and leave a space next to it, never stay in vehicle. After a quake the power grids and cell towers will most likely be down, so having a wind-up/solar rechargeable radio to hear current conditions and possible emergency services locations is best. Also one of the most important things to remember is when the power is out, credit card and ATM machines will not function. Keeping a stash of small bill cash in your kit can go a long way for additional needed supplies. Toilets run off of an electric pump so you should have an alternative option or enough water to fill the rear tank of the toilet before flushing. Some of these tips may be known, and to some it may be new. In any case knowing what to do during and after an earthquake and being prepared to put these practices into action is what will make the difference. Even the most knowledgeable and prepared people can freeze up in an instance of crisis
