Edith Eva Eger was just 16 years old and an aspiring Olympian when the young Hungarian Jew was shipped off to Auschwitz along with her family during World War II. Seventy years after the concentration camp was liberated, the Holocaust survivor recently opened up about the horrific experience, which included having to dance for Dr. Joseph Mengele -- the so-called “Angel of Death” – after he killed her parents. “I was so scared,” the former ballerina told CNN.“I closed my eyes, and I pretended that the music was Tchaikovsky, and I was dancing ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in the Budapest opera house.” Now 87, Eger has devoted her life to helping others. She currently lives in La Jolla where she works as a clinical therapist specializing in treating patients suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. But her greatest pride and joy are her three young great-grandchildren. “That’s the best revenge to Hitler I can think of,” she said, pointing to their photos.
