Eight injured in breakdown-lane crash on North Coast - Weekend Traffic Wrap Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash on the state’s North Coast in which eight people were injured. About 4.20pm on Saturday 19 October 2013, a white Toyota Corolla entered the south-bound breakdown lane of the Pacific Highway near Cowper, north of Grafton. It’s alleged the Corolla crashed into a Holden Commodore already parked in the breakdown lane, which shunted forward into a stationary Holden utility. As a result of the incident, eight people were taken to hospital: two women, a man and six-year-old girl who were standing on a grass verge near the vehicles; two young children inside the Commodore; and the 85-year-old female Corolla driver and her 79-year-old passenger. All were treated for various injuries, the most serious being fractures sustained by the six-year-old girl, who was pinned beneath the utility. One south-bound lane of the Pacific Highway was closed for eight hours. Officers from the Far North Coast Crash Investigation Unit have been tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Inquiries are continuing. “While we encourage motorists to take regular rest breaks on long drives, we also urge them to do so in a safe place – such as a designated rest area,” Acting Traffic and Highway Patrol Operations Commander, Acting Superintendent Simon Maund, said.
