Embarrassment. Leads to shame, and lying, and deception, and envy, and greed. And we teach it to each other and the children as a way to keep them from doing things we dont like, instead of using some other means (good or bad) to change their behavior. This made me think of Adam and Eve actually. The tree of knowledge taught embarrassment and shame. Now, those who know me will quickly acknowledge that Im not very religious and certainly dont look at the Bible as anything more a set of parables. But I do look at them as parables, and when there are correlations, sometimes parables work well. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.(Gen,3,5) Without knowing between right and wrong, there is never a wrong of which to be ashamed, nor a right of which to be proud. There is at most strong and weak. But I think we got so lost in the thrill of being better, since there were some who were right and some who were wrong, that we started applying it to far too many things. Unfortunately, after all those things were subjected to right, wrong, better, worse, it means weve changed to the point where even stopping applying that shame-label wont undo the damages. But at least itll help some. The problem isnt reversing the direction, its slowing down the oscillation when it gets to a least energy state where the most people are the least unhappy. Too far the other way is anarchy which will have the same effect as too far the way were going. Eventually the most people are going to be the least happy, and large-scale revolt will push the pendulum back in the other direction. Wow, what a difficult thing to try to do. I marvel at the amount of work I predict someone would have to do to find a way to achieve that sort of equilibrium.
