According to his testimony, he received name from boyhood fight in which blood of Cheyenne adversary smeared his face paint. During his youth, he rose to prominence as warrior & major leader in Lakota tribe. Late in life, he related name was reinforced when he was in battle in heavy rainstorm with band of Gros Ventres. At end of lengthy combat, his face was streaked with war paint.
