Exactly 49 years ago today, with a working title of Scrambled Eggs, Paul McCartney recorded Yesterday by himself in EMI (Abbey Road) Studios. He had tried unsuccessfully to fit in the rest of the Beatles. During the shooting of Help!, a piano was placed on one of the stages where filming was being conducted and McCartney took advantage of this opportunity to tinker with the song. Richard Lester, the director of the film, was eventually greatly annoyed by this and lost his temper, telling McCartney to finish writing the song or he would have the piano removed. It would later be recorded by over 3,000 other artists and become the most covered tune in music history. In describing it, Paul has said I did the tune easily and then the words took about two weeks.
