Exercise of the Month By Renee Sloan Seated Bentover DB Shoulder Extensions Muscles Worked: • Rotator cuff muscles (shoulder stabilizers) • Rhomboids (secondary, muscles between the shoulder blades) • Core (torso muscles maintaining body position) This exercise is a useful rehabilitative exercise primarily for the rotator cuff muscles which stabilize the shoulder. To increase core activation, this exercise may be made more difficult by performing it seated on a fitball or on a dynadisk (placed on a bench). Consult with the fitness staff to determine whether this exercise is right for you. Technique: Sit down on the end of a bench with a DB in each hand. Lean forward slightly from the waist, arms relaxed at your sides, your back straight, head and neck neutral. This is your starting position. While keeping elbows straight, move both arms backwards from the shoulders only, without moving your upper body or shrugging your shoulders. Pause, and then slowly return both arms to starting position. Repeat for designated number of repetitions.
