Express yourself... Just back from a lovely afternoon with our Live Life Well peer support and discussion group - at Kintyre Care Home, Invergordon. And what an expressive lot of people we were. At previous themed sessions, wed discussed Feelings; The Value of Friendship; Life in the Care Environment;Memory and Memories, and much more. However, this time we decided to explore the (seemingly simple) subject of Expressing Yourself. We began by talking about how people express themselves - and our group quickly noted that we used our faces and our bodies, as well as through what we said and did. And we all agreed how different and changing feelings could make us change the way we looked, communicated and behaved. We could express happiness and sadness, anger and contentment, pain and pleasure - but we could also express things like friendship, or agreement and disagreement. Expression and self-expression were much bigger subjects than wed first thought. We had a bit of facial-expression-fun with a camera, we talked about making ourselves feel small, puffing out our chests and grinning like Cheshire cats. Then we all, at random, chose a little bit of paper from a box. Each piece of paper asked the chooser to talk for one minute on a given subject ... and talk as expressively as we could. Eight subjects later, and with many questions and answers, wed proved what a bright and canny bunch we were. Next time, by popular request, well do something with music first, then talk about how to get things done when youre an older person. (Ken - LIve Life Well as you grow older - development worker)
