F/TOWN, DAVENPORT SIGN DEAL The city of Francistown has entered into a twinning agreement with the city of Davenport in the United States of America which will focus on economic development, culture, education, environmental, and public health. In an interview, the Francistown mayor said the twinning agreement was as a result of efforts by the Botswana Embassy in Washington DC which has been engaged in finding towns in America which could partner with Botswana towns which have the same population and development phase as theirs. Mayor James Kgalajwe and his delegation signed the twinning agreement with Davenport mayor, Bill Gulba in Iowa during a three day official visit to the US. Mayor Kgalajwe spoke highly of the agreement, saying it would make it easier for towns in Botswana to have access to trade skills, equipment, resources and strategic planning, similar to those in other places internationally. This, he highlighted, would place development in Botswana’s cities at the same level as that of towns in developed countries. While in America, the delegation managed to address Batswana women doing business in America, adding that the Botswana-America Chamber of Commerce is penetrating the American market in all sectors. Mayor Kgalajwe said the women advised the delegation to group women in Botswana so that they could come and counsel them on how to penetrate the American markets. The Botswana-America Chamber of Commerce was invited by the delegation for a business forum in Botswana held in August 19, this year in Francistown aimed at promoting investment. They Mayor pleaded with journalists in Francistown to write positive reviews about their city to help attract business. “We cannot afford to drop the ball. Already Francistown as compared to other cities we have visited lacks resources in terms of infrastructure to host big events. We would wish for our city to have its own international convention centre, youth development centers that promote arts. We are looking for people with money to come and invest and help us sell Francistown,” said. For his part, the City clerk, Mr Lebuile Israel said,“We have noticed that cities which are developing are making it a trend to partner with other cities. What we can say is that no city in the world can develop on its own. We too have to partner with other developing cities.” (BOPA)
