****FOLLOW UP POST TO ALGAE WARNING; INFORMATION & SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR**** We just want to say thank you to everyone that has helped spread the word, with your help weve managed to reach out to more than 30,000 people and hopefully prevented any pets being put at risk. If you are concerned about possible exposure here is some extra information: Blue-green algae can produce toxins that affect people, livestock and pets that swim in or drink from the water it grows in. They form blooms that give the water a blue/green appearance, it can sometimes look like there is blue or green paint on the surface of the water. While most blue-green algae blooms do not produce toxins, its impossible to tell which ones do without testing so ALL blooms should be considered potentially toxic. Just a very small amount of exposure to toxic blooms can result in fatal poisoning. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for the toxins produced by blue-green algae. Immediate veterinary care is VITAL. If you suspect your dog was exposed, call us at the practice for advice. Here are some symptoms to look out for: * vomiting/especially with blood * diarrhoea, blood in stools or black, tarry stool * Pale, yellow or blue discolouration to the skin or mucus membranes * tender abdomen * Seizures * Disorientation, weakness or collapse * coma * difficulty breathing If you have any worries at all, please dont hesitate to call the practice on 0151 525 0847 or visit us.
