FRIDAY, JULY 5 - 2 Samuel 7:1-29 biblegateway/passage/?search=2Sm+7:1-29&version=ESV “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom” (v.12). This passage is often misunderstood as speaking of David’s son Solomon who would construct the first temple in Jerusalem. However, the word that came to Nathan described this offspring as being raised up after David’s death. David made Solomon the king, so that Solomon was raised up before David’s death (1 Kings 1:35). Also, the house or temple of God constructed by Solomon was destroyed. Therefore, this text is not speaking of Solomon and can only be understood to be speaking of a descendant further removed. We know that descendant was born to a virgin in the city of David. Jesus, according to His human nature, was a descendant of David (Matthew 1:17). “Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, ‘You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.’” (Matthew 24:1-2). Indeed the temple that was in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus was destroyed as well. The temple constructed by David’s descendant is described in Revelation 21:22, “I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” The fulfillment of Scripture is a magnificent thing. God has kept His Word from the time of David to Jesus and to the end. You don’t have to wait for the fulfillment of Revelation to come to the temple constructed by Jesus. As you believe in Him as your Savior, God welcomes you into this house and uses you as one of the building blocks. Peter spoke of this when he said, “you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).
