FRIENDS: A big door was closed on me this morning, I know YOU know that feeling so empathize with me a little.. I was denied a living permit in Italy today, which means no fiscal code, no tax ID, no chance for autonomous work and ultimately, a stunted future in the European Union without living as an immigrant. There are loop-holes to this dilemma which ARE possible to jump, through several months of notarized paperwork, headaches, flights back to the US to speak with the Italian Embassy in America, visas, licenses, fees etc. Will I jump them? No... I was given an opportunity to enjoy Italy and what it has to offer: To explore, to engage, to see life through a different lens.. My girlfriend Mackenzie and I live in a beautiful home in the center of a revolutionary city: Livorno, in the beautiful province of Tuscany. I drink PHENOMENAL wine sold by the people that make it, and I buy it by the 5 Liter jug!(at 2 euro per liter whos to blame me) I wake up in the morning and go around the corner and buy the freshest eggs from a sweet lady named Suzy SO fresh, in fact, that they still have feathers on them sometimes. After, we indulge in an AMAZING cappuccino from The New York Cafe and enjoy a friendly italian conversation with our friend barista, and his wife, and daughter. A nice stroll at the daily market re-stocks my fridge and it gives me a dose of true italian life as we hear about it.. The yelling, the waving of the hands, the BELLAs, porco dios and vaffanculos.. The laughter, the hugs, and the double kisses. This place is magical.. even in the middle of an economic crisis. With the high-speed rail I live 3 hours from Rome and its big touristy attractions and an hour and a half from Cinque Terre(one of the most beautiful places Ive gotten to know) and its secluded beauty. This is our life right now. Am I sad I got denied? No. Im glad I got the opportunity. You can live your life with your glass half empty or half full, its your choice... Mine, could use a little more wine.. :]
