FROM A TEACHER on TEACHING: In our weekly PLC meeting, we were told (non-maliciously) that our roles as teachers are changing; we would no longer be considered those who would pass on information and knowledge to children, but rather that we will become mere facilitators in a 21st century classroom. The kids will basically be teaching themselves via computer; the years of content knowledge and creativity I have stored up inside of me are basically going to be worthless and unnecessary, and I will be there to basically make sure they figure out how to find information online. If a trained monkey is what they want, what is the need for a teacher? A REAL teacher who knows their subject and has a passion for imparting it through a variety of means and through narration and stories? How can a computer transfer passion and creativity? Ive kept that simmering inside today and the more it has, the more depressed Ive become. This is not what my profession was ever meant to be and yet no one, NO ONE said anything to challenge that statement (myself included...) Your roles are changing, they said...and if they do, Im not so sure I want to even be a teacher anymore because the definition of what I do wont be legitimate any longer...
