FROM THE NEWSROOM: Efforts are being made to remove stumps, underbrush, and debris on the hillside leading to the Thompson public school complex following the deforestation project enabled by a security grant. Over the course of the next week or two, a local fire department has agreed to conduct a controlled burn for no cost to the town, as it would provide good training for firefighters, helping to get rid of what Board of Education Chairman Bill Witkowski called “an unsightly mess.” However, Witkowski said public opinion has been shifting in favor of the tree removal project, despite numerous complaints and an earlier reported off-site protest which garnered police response; while many initially criticized the perceived negative aesthetic impact of the hills deforestation, Witkowsi said many have come to appreciate the improved visibility of the complex and the North Grosvenordale scenery from the school-grounds. As reported, emergency responders have also praised the project for making emergency response easier, as demonstrated during recent drills. Tune in for the full report.
