FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Killingly, some residents in the approximately six-street area surrounding Maple Street are still concerned about the feral cat population, according to resident Denise Cook, who spoke out at a recent Public Safety Commission meeting. Cook says that while so far the non-profit rescue group Passions For Paws has helped trap an estimated 80 or more cats to put up for adoption, there are still an estimated 50 cats left in the vicinity, as of last week. However, the situation has been complicated, Cook says, ever since a woman who had previously been feeding the cats was hospitalized, and according to local volunteers, recently passed away; now, Cook claims, a local animal group known as Pet Pals Northeast, Inc. has taken to feeding the cats, but Cook says thats counterproductive to the trapping process. But Fay Beriau, a Pet Pals volunteer, denied Cooks claims; she said that while the group does help distribute food to locals who care for feral cats, the organization is not responsible for directly feeding any of those cats. Killingly Town Manager Sean Hendricks says that a feral cat ordinance is currently being drafted which would prevent so-called “cat-hoarding” in the town, and give local and regional authorities the ability to enforce the measures. Tune in for the full report.
