FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Thompson, Board of Education members are researching why the town is receiving a significantly lower amount of special education funds from the state, than it did last year. The Board of Finance was recently notified that the town will receive $212,000 less in special education reimbursement than it did last year – and $130,000 less than was budgeted for this year. “It reduces the surplus, and the surplus is what the town depends on to get through bad times,” said Finance Director Mike Martin. “It will probably reduce our surplus by about $137,000. Is it major? No, but its quite a bit of money for a town of Thompsons size.” Martin says that, while it remains unclear why exactly the special education reimbursement is down, it may have been the result of a filing mistake at the Board of Education level – the school district has been without a dedicated Business Manager for the last few months. Martin says its possible a mistake could have been made. “We only thought we were going to get more because we budget based on the prior year. We have no idea what has changed up [at the Board of Education] other than we havent had a finance person up there for three months.” He says that, should an error have been made, the state is expected to make up the amount in Education Cost Sharing Funds next year – meaning its possible that the town wont totally lose out on the state funding. Tune in for the full report.
