FROM THE NEWSROOM: NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Two volunteers researching whether to establish regional emergency dispatch for Newtown have found it can increase public safety and save money. The News-Times reports that former Legislative Council Chairman Jeff Capeci and council member Neil Chaudhary began investigaing regional emergency dispatch nearly a year ago. Capeci and Chaudhary say regionalized emergency dispatch is worth further consideration. They considered regional emergency dispatch centers in Prospect and Litchfield. The Police Commission and many emergency responders, including the towns 10 dispatchers, oppose regionalized emergency dispatch. They say it sacrifices autonomy and community familiarity that could slow emergency response. Newtowns dispatch center was recognized for its professionalism and performance during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings on Dec. 14, 2012.
