FROM THE NEWSROOM: There will soon be an official “Easy Street” in Sterling, following a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to the towns Board of Selectmen to accept it into the town road system. About six years ago, a property in the northeast corner of Sterling—off of Calvin French Road—was subdivided and development began, with plans for a cul de sac to be established in five years time. Last year, that time came and went, and an extension was granted to the developer of the subdivision, Delta Properties. Since then, the unofficial road known as “Easy Street” has been paved, and curbs have been cut in front of the several houses that have already been built there. Before Easy Street can be considered a part of the town road system, two more requirements must be fulfilled: a $10,000 surety bond must be issued by the developer to cover any maintenance costs that may arise from the impact of the new construction upon pre-existing, adjacent lots—and an easement to road plans and deeds regarding drainage must be accepted. A nearby resident had expressed concerns over inadequate drainage systems at the subdivision leaking overflow water onto their property, but it was found that the issue stemmed from a culvert that already existed on Calvin French Road. Town officials still plan to inspect Easy Street to make sure that new construction is not interfering with the drainage flow from the existing town structure. If it does so happen that work is needed to be done to correct any grading issues, the $10,000 surety bond will cover the cost, and the remainder will be paid back to Delta Properties in one years time. The Board of Selectmen will convene on December 3rd, and First Selectman Russel Grey said that “its kind of a formality that we will vote to accept that road into the system.” Residents will then vote upon that decision at a town meeting, which is expected to take place, tentatively, on December 17th. Grey added that, until the road is adopted, school buses and postal workers are not supposed to use it. Resident mailboxes are currently located on Calvin French Road; however, once Easy Street becomes an official town road, those mailboxes can be located at the end of each driveway, and public and municipal vehicles will be allowed access. Tune in for the full report.
