FROM THE NEWSROOM: To address continuing concerns within the Putnam Finance Office regarding an inability of employees to keep up with the growing workload and advancing technology, the Board of Selectmen recently voted in favor of transferring a figure not to exceed $20,000 from the towns health insurance account for a needs assessment in that department. Finance Director and Treasurer Sandra Savoie explained because the health benefit costs for this fiscal year are coming in less than anticipated, that money would pay professionals to assess the training, educational and professional needs of the finance staff. But as the town falls farther and farther behind getting its bills paid on time, how will the staff catch up in the mean time? Savoie said the finance office is utilizing $10,000 in previously appropriated funds to pay an accounting and finance major from Nichols College in Dudley, Mass., to work as a paid intern until he graduates in May. With the extra help from the intern, Savoie said the office will hopefully be able to hold off until the next budget season, at which point the question of whether to hire a new full-time employee – something thats been discussed at several recent meetings – is expected to come up again. The transfer is still pending Board of Finance approval. Tune in for the full report.
