FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Governor Dannel Malloy has announced that the town of Pomfret has been awarded $166,000 from the state’s Main Street Investment Fund to construct sidewalks in the area of Pomfret Hill, from Routes 44, 169, and 244 -- tying together a stretch of roadway that houses two private schools and several churches. First Selectman Maureen Nicholson says that the town applied for the funding last year but was denied, and that she is thrilled that Pomfret this year received a portion of the funding that it applied for, even though the area of town that will benefit doesnt fall into the category of a traditional “downtown” area. “Its a Main Street Investment Fund, which a lot of people assume is a downtown,” said Nicholson. “Since we really dont have that, we just decided to apply for it anyway because what we have is our downtown – its different in a rural town than it is in a more urban community, but I think it brings our town together so Im very excited about this project.” Pomfret had applied for more than $200,000 in grant funding. “We didnt get the full award of the grant that we applied for,” said Nicholson. “Of course some of those things will have to be scaled back, but the most important thing is that we will get the sidewalks put in and that will be safety improvement up there.” As reported, Pomfret is one of the 13 municipalities across Connecticut, receiving funding from a pool of $5 million in grants that the Governor says is meant to develop or improve town commercial districts in an effort to attract small businesses, grow jobs, and improve pedestrian access and livability in town centers. Tune in for the full report.
