FROM THE NEWSROOM: With school starting in Brooklyn, Superintendent Dr. Louise Berry says that the district will be implementing a multitude of new safety features, many of which stem from recommendations by local law enforcement. State troopers went on a three hour walk-through of the Brooklyn school facilities, where they pointed out and discussed various safety concerns and hypothetical scenarios with the superintendent, who says that on Monday officers returned for a workshop with the entire staff. Berry said administrators got “a healthy point of view” from the experience, and praised the dedication and organization of the officers, saying that she hopes that other schools in the region are as open to coordinating with law enforcement to better their facilities as well. One of the new features will be the formation of a new safety committee, and there are also plans to create a crisis committee that will guide and assist students in the event of an emergency, when tensions are running high. The superintendent said she will also be creating a booklet of the schools safety programs, that will further teach both students and staff of various incidents and how to react to protect both themselves and others. Tune in for the full report.
