FROM THE NEWSROOM: Wreaths Across America Day will occur on Saturday, December 13th and once again American Legion Post 13 and the Putnam Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1523 will honor the fallen by participating in a public wreath laying ceremony, according to a news release. Since 1992, Wreaths Across America, a national nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, has honored fallen veterans by donating and laying more than one million wreaths on the stones at Arlington National Cemetery. In 2012, the one-millionth wreath was placed.Last year, in its 22nd year, 540,000 remembrance wreaths were placed; 143,000 of them at Arlington National Cemetery. At 12:00pm on Saturday, December 13, just as Wreaths Across America begins this year’s National Remembrance Ceremony in Washington, DC, local veterans organizations will remember the lost, as well. Last year, more than 900 participating locations all around the country, in all 50 states, and overseas, took part – this year likely more will do the same. The public is invited to join American Legion Post 13 and VFW Post 1523, the Town of Putnam and other dignitaries, in their salute to the fallen. Post 13 will begin at Veterans Memorial Park in Putnam where a short ceremony, along with a moment of silence, will be observed to thank those who have served, those who have given all, and those who celebrate this holiday season knowing that a loved one is serving in harm’s way. Joining the veteran’s organizations once again this year will be Town Administrator Doug Cutler, who continues to facilitate this annual event, along with other representatives from the community. Mayor Tony Falzarano will be present and is looking forward to the opportunity to honor and thank those who can no longer serve, as well as those who continue to do so. Following the 12:00pm ceremony, Post 13 will visit and honor nearly a dozen other Putnam locations including the Bridge Street Bridge, the bridge over the Little River at Route 44, St. Marys Cemetery, the Providence Street Bridge, the Medal of Honor Bridge, the Civil War Monument, Grove Street Cemetery, Aspinock Cemetery, Putnam Heights Cemetery and Munyan Cemetery. Those attending the December 13 ceremonies are encouraged to accompany the post and to bring wreaths for their own personal dedication.
