FYI 101 From BlaQ Diamond to You... First and Foremost, Im so sorry tht several of u and / or ur loved ones are battling the winter bugs (viruses/illnesses). I pray for a quick recovery. Im getn quite a few questions about cough syrups. #1. Due to certain standards and guidelines under my profession, Im not able to give medical advice especially of tht which involves medication. #2. Cough Syrup Varies So check with ur PCP to see which is recommended for U. #3. Whn buying over the counter cough syrups...Make Sure ur buying the one tht fits ur cold/Flu symptoms... 3a. Do u have chest congestion with ur cough OR Do u have a dry cough? This is my question to u? Yes or No? 3b. Pay attention to the TYPE of Cough Medicine; Expectorant vs Suppressant Expectorants are for those of u who have productive coughs meaning, ur coughing up phlegm/mucus. The expectorants thins or liquify ur chest secretions so tht u can cough it up; ridding the mucus from ur lungs. Suppressants are for those who have a dry cough (no chest congestion) and needs it suppressed. We do not chase it with other liquids such as water or soda after swallowed becas, it has a soothing effect as it coats the throat. Some syrups have both. Thus, the label will read, Expectorant and Suppressant. Chest congestion is not good for the Lungs becas bacteria can easily produce and quickly multiply especially in thick warm mucus. So if u have chest congestion, Wud u want to suppress (stop) ur cough or wud u want to be able to expectorate ur mucus/phlegm? #4. Drinkn plenty of water during ur down time will help keep ur secretions thin as well as ur body hydrated especially if fever is a factor. Note: U cant treat a cold with antibiotics becas a cold is a Virus. Antibiotics treats Bacterias which in many cases makes ur symptoms worse. Therefore, as ur flu or cold runs its coarse, treat the symptoms appropriately. Whn it comes to minors especially those under 12years old, ALWAYS contact ur familys pediatrician/PCP before giving OTC Meds and even with prescribed meds, be sure u give the prescribed dose accurately. Whn it comes to those of u who may have Hypertension (high blood pressure), ALWAYS contact ur PCP becas many OTC cough syrups can have properties tht RAISES Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar as well as having other side effects Which may be contraindicated for certain illnesses, diseases, and disorders... If ur phlegm color changes from white or yellow tinged to thick dark yellow or green, and /or is accompanied by fever, and u have any other concerns, contact ur PCP for further evaluation and treatment. Expectorants and Suppressants Know the Difference... I hope tht ths has bn helpful to u in some way or another, ONE Love My Sistas & Brothas Ur Girl BlaQ🌹
