FYI – Why I chose John Scopes as my avatar for Ferragosto. In 1925, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant squared off in a courtroom battle infamously known as “The Scopes Trial”, or, as the media would have it, “The Monkey Trial”. It was the first trial in U.S. history that was broadcast nationally. At the center of this controversial whirlwind of a trial was a biology teacher, John Thomas Scopes, who was accused of teaching Evolution in his biology class, an act that was strictly forbidden by Tennessee state law. He was found guilty as charged, and fined $100. Sadly, not much has changed in the past 88 years. Fundamentalists, bigots and profiteers still have way too much influence on the education of our kids, and I protest.
