Facebook apologized for the way the LGBT community has been - TopicsExpress

Facebook apologized for the way the LGBT community has been affected by their legal names policy. They DID NOT apologize for the policy itself. They continue to assert that the only way to create a safe community for everyone on Facebook is to authenticate someones identity. 1. Facebook agrees that we should be allowed to display our chosen true identity on Facebook, like we do in our every day lives. They are working on implementing those changes as we speak. 2. Facebook realizes that they need to change their definition of a real name as well as find new ways to authenticate someones identity. 3. Facebook claims that it was never their intention for users to be forced to display our legal names, especially without our consent. 4. Facebook admits that there are flaws in the legal name policy reporting procedure. They are going to review the entire process including determining serial reporters, and implementing an option for users who have been reported to contest the claim that they are fake and prove to Facebooks satisfaction that they are in fact real people. 5. Facebook commits to remove the two week to comply order. They claim that was a mistake from the beginning. They are going to work on all of their messaging to make it more clear and give people an opportunity for more interaction. 6. Facebook plans on developing high level technology that will determine if a profile is fake on the back end. If successful this would greatly reduce the amount of profile reporting and suspension. This is very good news. I sincerely believe that Facebook hears our concerns and I know that they have been working diligently to explore ways to modify their policies and procedures globally to create an authentic and safe environment for all users. Todays meeting was a GIANT step in the right direction. But this is not over. While most of the actions promised by Facebook will affect users worldwide, we must continue to work with them until everyone, not just drag queens and the LGBT community, has the right to use their chosen, protective and authentic identities. See you all at the rally tomorrow. 12 Noon, SF City Hall. We have lots to celebrate! Much Love, Roma
