Failure to take chances costs Under 16 team U16 A Hurling Championship Final Score: Saint Josephs Doora Barefield 2-12 Sixmilebridge 2-13 The under 16 first team played the second round of the Under 16 A championship today in Sixmilebridge against Sixmilebridge. Despite leading for the vast majority of the game, Saint Joseph’s Doora-Barefield came out the wrong side of the result with the final score reading Sixmilebridge 2-13 Doora Barefield 2-12. In the opening minutes, Sixmilebridge registered the first score of the game before Saint Joseph’s Doora Barefield’s Cathal Ruane expertly controlled a high ball on the edge of the square before firing to the net. Tom Hannon sored two brilliant long range points in the first half while Darragh Duggan and Conor Tierney caused trouble for the Sixmilebridge defense. Cian Barron, wing back for the Parish had a very good game all through sweeping breaking ball in the half back line. Score at half time read Saint Joseph’s Doora Barefield 1-9 Sixmilebridge 0-6. Darragh Duggan worked extremely hard in a withdrawn role from the full forward line and in all score 5 points during the game. Goalkeeper Kieran Mulqueen was in superb form making some vital saves and interceptions before the half time break. Sixmilebridge started brighter in the second, scoring immediately from throw in. With 15 minutes gone in the second half the scoreline read 1-9 to 1-7 with Sixmilebridge benefitting from a mistake in the Parish full back line letting the corner forward in to pounce and he shot a low ball into the far corner of the net, leaving Kieran Mulqueen with no chance. Sixmilebridge had all the momentum and kicked on. Saint Joseph’s Doora Barefield had great chances to put the game beyond the hosts but over-elaborate play and taking too much out of the ball offered Sixmilebridge a pathway back into the game. Cathal Ruane goaled from a penalty after controlling a ball in the square before being fouled. In the final ten minutes the Parish were found wanting and Kieran Mulqueen stood no chance for Sixmilebridge’s second goal. With 28minutes gone in the second half, Sixmilebridge levelled with a finely placed shot to the top right hand corner of the net. The Bridge then converted a late free to win the game.
