Falmouth Elks has been asked to post the following: Contact: Carole Kenney Falmouth Military Support Group 508-274-4848 On Tuesday, July 9th, at 5:30 PM, we will dedicate the town’s first beach-accessible handicapped ramp in honor of former Falmouth resident and U.S. Army Sgt. Matthew R. Gallagher. The ramp is located at the Old Silver Beach resident parking lot in North Falmouth. The public is invited. It’s been two years (June 26, 2011) since Sgt. Gallagher’s death in Iraq and the Falmouth Military Support Group began fundraising almost immediately after hearing the news. Close to $9,000 has been raised thus far. Much of it was collected in small donations at a candlelight vigil held for Sgt. Gallagher during the summer of 2011, and more came from winter Polar Plunges in 2012 and 2013. In addition to the ramp, a plaque in Matthew’s honor was dedicated last July 4th at the Old Silver Beach Association’s new bridge. As with donations, ramp planning began shortly after Matthew’s death. That included getting necessary permits, securing Conservation Commission approval, developing site plans, and the like. The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office has also played a major role. The ramp’s construction was accomplished by county inmates. That amounts to $11,500 worth of donated labor [figured conservatively by the Sheriff’s Office at $30 per hour]. [Please take note: This represents a change of date, from July 2nd to July 9th.]
