Fascinating Fact #2: Joe Strummer’s real name was John Graham Mellor, and he was born in Ankara, Turkey – the son of a British foreign service diplomat. As a result, Strummer spent parts of his early childhood in Cairo, Mexico City, and Bonn. At the age of 9, Strummer and his older brother David, 10, began boarding at the City of London Freemens School in Surrey. Strummer rarely saw his parents during the next seven years. Strummer, initially, was a fan of The Beach Boys (Strummer once said that the reason he played music was the Beach Boys) and American folk-singer Woody Guthrie (Strummer even used the nickname “Woody” for a few years). But he eventually adopted the name “Strummer,” which friends used to call him Strummer because he was known to strum Johnny B. Goode on a ukulele in London subway stations.
