Feeling angry? Did you know that Cadmium toxicity has been linked to irrational feelings of anger and violence. What is Cadmium? Cadmium is a silver-white, blue-tinged metal that is found in the earth’s crust. It is odorless by nature. A natural element found in a mineral combined with other elements. The chemical formula for cadmium is Cd. Examples of some cadmium compounds: cadmium oxide, cadmium sulfate, cadmium sulfide, and cadmium chloride. What is Cadmium in? Cadmium can be found in root vegetables, animal milk, breads and cereals. Cadmium is emitted by the combustion of fossil fuels, cigarette smoking, and burning waste. During World War I, cadmium was used as a substitute for tin. Today, cadmium is used as an ingredient in so many things: batteries. pigments craft glazes coatings and platings stabilisers for plastics printing and dyeing textiles manufacturing fungicides soldering aluminium photocopying electroplating automotive, aircraft, and electronic parts. analytical chemistry and nuclear reactors used as a hardener for copper. And the effects on our health....? Cadmium is in the Twelfth Report on Carcinogens published by the National Toxicology Program. it is known to cause cancer in some individuals. Long-term exposure to high levels of cadmium is linked to lung cancer. Breathing high levels of cadmium can severely damage the lungs. Eating food or drinking water with very high levels of cadmium can irritate the stomach, leading to vomiting and diarrhoea. Long-term exposure to lower levels of cadmium can lead to a buildup of cadmium in the kidneys and in some cases may be responsible for kidney disease. Other health effects linked to cadmium toxicity are as follows: lung damage emphysema bronchitis fragile bones pulmonary edema difficult breathing anemia rhinitis discoloration of teeth. convulsions headache muscular cramps vertigo cough headache chest pain irritability bronchopneumonia, throat and nose irritation.
