Fellow Co-op members: I find it interesting that nobody has compared the controversy that has engulfed the Co-op with the controversy that has engulfed the Marketbasket supermarket chain. True, Marketbasket does not compete directly with the Co-op. But, under the leadership of the ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, Marketbasket has become the chain the Co-op is (or was) most afraid of. The reason is simple: Marketbasket appeared to hit the sweet spot when it came to price, customer service and employee satisfaction. I might be oversimplifying the longstanding feud within the Demoulas family but my hypothesis is that what Marketbasket was doing was too good to be true -- too much negative impact on the bottom line for a profit-maximizing firm. Note how the replacement co-CEOs have stonewalled -- that is NOT the way the Co-op has handled its recent troubles. Moral: We are lucky that our community has nurtured such an institution for the past 77 years -- it is not something to be squandered.
