Few days back I posted something like -- that I m as much of a womens rights activists as an animals rights activist.... because both are largely treated as good as non-humans !! ... it was a satire! :) Ohh, by the way, I m sure few of you must have already cringed at the mention of womens rights.....I know it is a boring topic for many... ironically, even if it is about them!! But then, as u know, I am not the one to go by YOUR rules... ;) I make my own, and I am NEVER a rebel too. Some erroneous definitions may go on to put me in that category, though. Today, I was reading about the founder of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk. She said that she has often been accused of being a nagging-crusader, a monster, an extremist, etc. She brought a dash of zeal in me when she said that she has often been criticized, made fun of, mocked at, smirked at, accused of spreading negativity, etc., and its often hard to get used to it. She said that she realizes its not she that people are attacking; its the idea that shes asking them to consider. She said that she has the reputation of never switching off from activist mode. I thanked her in my hear of hearts for giving me few sentences ( :P ) to re-kindle (not that it ever dimmed) my enthusiasm for the cause that I feel and fight for. Though, the tragedy remains that its NOT MY CAUSE. Its may be the cause of a neighbour or a friend or a boy friends sister, or a boy friends future daughter!! But not my cause. Its the societys turmoil I want to end. Or atleast make a beginning towards it. What gives me that angelic streak is something I myself dont know ;) ;) So, when a Vrinda says.. gitu di, aap kissi ki baat maanoge to ho nahi...or justifies rape by saying that we must accept the fact that men are biologically superior ( :O as I type this I still nod my head in disbelief).... or when a Birender warns his friend that the latter should be rather careful while talking to me lest he regrets later, ..... or when a U.S. Nim smells feminism when I talk strong, .... or when a Bhojpuri-loving Shrawan jocularly, lauds an article about women and society and says that the kahani (he calls it story!!!!) is to be concentrated on, ....or when a Shahroz Khan says that 90% of the women either sleep through the day or watch TV while all the men folk rub their asses out to earn for the household.... or when a teacher tells in the class that had Gitanjali (thats me) put in as much effort in studying as she puts in talking about and wasting time in feminism (which he also refers to as a pastime befitting badi-bindi wala gang)......or when a mother checks me saying, Where the hell is your focus?? Do you plan to end up in an NGO?.....or when a sister says, Is it worth it to waste so much time on this issue?...........................I smile. Almost always I smile. A couple of times, felt annoyed and broken too, though. A particular remark made my eyes well up too. But thats that. I totally understand that few had intellectual limitations, few had emotional limitations, few had (or so they thought) no stakes in the whole idea of feminism, few hardly knew what feminism is, few had to gain brownie points with the teacher, the teacher, on the other hand, had academic boundaries, few misunderstood an opinionated woman like me as an outspoken individual who could never switch off from the activist mode (Ingrid Newkirk), the mother wanted her daughter to do well in life, both professionally and financially, the sister was merely concerned about her little sister that probably she was taking too much load, or few are plainly in a denial mode; they refuse to accept that A PROBLEM EXISTS. So, its now that I choose and decide to take recourse to the words of Ingrid Newkirk. She says, Whats wrong in being an activist? Its the only thing that has ever changed the world. So hurray! :) :) PS: Yes, I took some names very clearly. But the list does not stop here. And, its not a blame post, as is quite evident. If anyone feels offended, Id suggest, read the post again. Either you did not get what I said or the post needs to be translated in the language of your preference. Tell me, Ill do that. And gladly :)
