Fifty years ago today, on 9 December, 1964, four men walked into a New Jersey recording studio and layed down the tracks for one of the greatest jazz albums ever released. Saint John William Coltranes seminal work, A Love Supreme, was recorded in a single session at the Van Gelder Studios, released by Impulse! Records a couple of months later, and proceeded to outsell Coltranes other popular recordings by more than tenfold, eventually being certified gold in both Japan and the US. The album is frequently listed among the greatest jazz albums of all time and ranked at #47 on Rolling Stone magazines list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, in any genre.
