File under Unleash the hounds of shameless self-promotion!: If youre looking for something to do this Sunday night, Phoenix Theatres 24 Hour Theatre Project is happening that night at 7pm... and yours truly is one of the playwrights! I did this show a few years ago, co-writing a script with the supremely talented Kim Porter (whose Wake Of The Bounty play is being workshopped at Phoenix Theatre tomorrow night and Saturday, and is really worth seeing); this is my first time doing the show solo, and I am excited/terrified. Heres the gist of the show: on Saturday all the participants meet up at the theater. A director is randomly assigned to a writer; the writer picks how many actors they want in their piece (usually ranging from 2-5 actors); and then the director randomly picks the cast for that piece. Then the writers go home and have until 6am Sunday to write a complete short one act play (10-12 pages)... and heres the kicker: whatever costume the actors are wearing and props they bring with them to the selection night HAS TO BE WRITTEN INTO THE PLAY. So if an actor shows up dressed up as a zombie priest whos carrying a bouquet full of bacon wrapped flowers, the poor bastard writer who ends up with that actor HAS to write a zombie priest and a bouquet full of bacon wrapped flowers into their play somewhere. So back to the timeline: scripts are sent at 6am, the director and actors spend the whole day rehearsing, memorizing and blocking out the piece, and then at 7pm that night all the plays are done in front of an audience. Sometimes the results are amazing; sometimes... not so much. But its always unexpected, and you wont see a night of theater like this anywhere else! And it only happens once a year: miss this show and youll have to wait until the next Hormel New Works Festival to see it again. TL:DR- 24 Hour Theatre Project. This Sunday at 7pm at Phoenix Theatre (right next to Phx Art Museum). Tickets are $9. Come see the show, and maybe join me afterwards for drinks that will be 1) Celebratory or 2) Sorrow-Drowning.
