Alice Coltrane was, of course, married to the great John Coltrane, but carved out an estimable music career of her own, a long and fruitful one. A Monastic Trio was originally released on the Impulse label in 1968, and is essentially a testament and tribute to her husband, who died the year before. It is an absolute masterpiece of of experimental/spiritual jazz, with Coltrane on piano and harp, accompanied by JC alumni Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali and Jimmy Garrison. The tip-on gatefold sleeve and eye-fetching cover are the icing on the cake. Highly recommended.
