Finally saw Spartacus (1960, starring Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis. Dir. Stanley Kubrick). I was absolutely blown away. With a restored runtime of just under 200min, this epic follows a slave gladiator Spartacus and the slave revolution he leads against the Roman Republic/Empire, specifically its leader Crassus. For anyone who is a fan of Game of Thrones, this movie has numerous similarities, in its themes, grand scale, politics, wit and humor, and its characters in general. If you enjoy the Daenerys Targaryen and her habit of freeing slaves, you will love this movie. My absolute favorite part of this movie is the size of its production. When armies of 5,000+ slaves march against 10,000+ Roman troops, theres legitimately thousands of people on camera. With the grand landscape shots of the slaves marching, you see huge chunks of the Italian (actually shot in Spain) countryside with hundred or thousands of extras, all in appropriate clothing, carrying swords and whatnot. When the slaves set up camps and villages, theres actually hundred of tents set up, with people skinning cows and training warriors. I was constantly blown away buy how awesome it was. You can easily see that its a Kubrick movie, you can recognize his camera movements and humor right away. If you like Kubrick (which is why I watched this movie), check it out.
