First Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation moves again due to gas smell By Ron Vidika, The Morning Journal Posted: 10/03/14, 4:25 PM EDT | Updated: 8 hrs ago The congregation of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, displaced since an Aug. 28 arson destroyed the Washington Avenue church, has been rerouted again to yet another worship site. The congregation had been assembling Sundays at Admiral King Elementary School in Lorain. However, a suspected gas leak forced city safety and school officials to shut down the school Oct. 1 and necessitate the search for a new place to worship for First Lutheran. Now, the congregation will meet for joint worship at 10 a.m. on Oct. 5 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 647 Reid Ave. in Lorain. Parking is available on the street and in the municipal lot behind St. John U.C.C. on Seventh Street. Students and teachers of Admiral King Elementary will be temporarily relocated to three other buildings starting Oct. 6 due to the ongoing gas investigation. The investigation began Sept. 30 when Columbia Gas and the Lorain Fire Department responded to a natural gas odor in the cafeteria. Although a search showed nothing hazardous, officials continue to monitor the outside of the building. For further information, contact the Rev. Jimmy Madsen, First Evangelical Lutheran’s pastor, at 440-244-6286, ext. 11.
