First ride of the year about 16 WINDY miles. Tried to keep up with 4 experienced male cyclists and one who has about as much experience as me but is a Navy Seal...so...theres that. It was humbling to say the least to be Heather Roy who can and will run through anything. Weather, pain, fatigue, bad mental runs, on pace, off pace, hills hills and more hills. I can run as well if not better than I can walk most days. Put me on a bike and its like being a brand new runner all over again. I think I forgot I wasnt always the runner I am now. Today, I remembered. It made me empathic to my runners that still arent there yet but want to be...it made me hopeful my cycling career can (and WILL) mimic my running career. I was thinking on the bike, Its ok, you arent riding on their tail, they are men. You dont have to keep up. As soon as I thought that my strong self said, Eff that. You cant keep up today. You will though, because thats what you do. It was a little defeating to be the only girl among those guys (who love me and take such good care of me...even when I say...you dont have to wait for me. I yell loud. You will hear me if I crash). They each took a turn staying with me..because you know I have a tendency to crash!!!! No crashes today and for the first time EVER I rode down the hills and didnt hit the brakes once (Im scared to break my teeth if I crash going down the hills)!!! So I will take no crashes, no hill breaking, and for almost all of the ride keeping those guys in my sight as a victory. I am excited for the TREK and thankful to be riding with such wonderful friends! with Jay and the pro I dont know...
