Fishing Report 4.6.14 Huge schools of tuna spread from Southend all the way through too Apollo Bay are providing great sport for those venturing offshore. A 92kg fish was caught out off Port MacDonnell and several lost over the weekend. Several other big fish have also been caught from Portland through to Apollo Bay, one exceptional tuna pulling the scales down to 134kg. The average size fish has dropped back to around the 10 to 12kg mark but the numbers have definitely increased. Most are finding good numbers of fish in 30 to 50 meters but they are also spread out to the shelf and beyond. The bottom fishing has also been excellent right along the coast. The 60 to 100 meter line is still fishing well for school and gummy shark. Lawrie Bradley Brown and Huey Magarey boated a magnificent 20kg Samson fish out off Nene Valley on Saturday. The Coorong surf is fishing reasonably well with good numbers of salmon and gummy shark but from what I can gather, many of our local spots are fishing far better. Nene Valley through to Blackfellows Caves saw several school shark to 20kg beached over the weekend as did Piccinini. Salmon catches were also excellent from Red Rock Bay all the way through to Geltwood Beach. Quite a few reasonable mulloway have also been caught in the surf along the same area. One young lad even caught a small mulloway on a lure while casting for salmon in the corner of Red Rock. Most of our protected bays are producing good numbers of tommies, garfish and mullet. Plenty of silver trevally from Livingstons through to Lighthouse Bay but a boat is almost essential if you want to catch any number of them. Trevally are pretty good on the table but defiantly better when fresh! Should be a good weekend for catching a feed of mullet. Lighthouse Bay has been quite weedy but as this settles down, the mullet should be quite cooperative. The Eastern end of Red Rock Bay should also fish well but if driving in there, a 4WD is essential. Still plenty of action in the Glenelg River. The odd legal mulloway is still showing up in the estuary but still a lot of water between them. The bream and estuary perch action has been great all the way through, although most of the larger fish seem to be up above Wilsons Hall. With such a lovely weather forecast for the weekend it won’t be easy deciding where to fish! Have a safe weekend and I’ll catch you next week. -Craig
